Like many people of my generation, I first discovered fantasy worlds through morning cartoons. Then came comics, but The Lord of the Rings changed everything for me, followed by Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, and many more. I was an introverted child, often bored with ordinary life, and these worlds gave me somewhere to escape. Most importantly, I loved journeys that transformed characters, because they gave me hope that people could change too. I created fantasy realms in my head for years, but it took reaching my 40s to finally start putting them on paper. Today, I write and publish my own stories, including Chronicles of Ankhara, through AltWorld Comics.
I read this trilogy in 1998 when I had just finished high school.
Even then, I understood the book presented Frodo as the main hero, but I was always aware that without Sam, Frodo couldn't go far. He was just a gardener in the beginning, but when the books were over, he proved himself and even became the mayor of the Shire.
Seeing a regular guy carrying the main hero on his shoulders is something else. The decisions he made and his forcing himself to do more transformed him into a natural hero and a leader.

But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
I read this trilogy after I finished The Lord of the Rings.
I was surprised, and I really enjoyed the action and fight scenes it brought to the genre. I had recently met with D&D at that time, and I could see the dice rolling while reading, which was satisfying. But the real surprise was Raistlin's morally grey character turning full dark mode.
I had seen the cliché of the villain turning good many times. But this was something else. It changed all my expectations from a book, movie, or comic. To this day, as an author, I’m still trying to shock myself with the same approach. Hopefully one day I can.

Drizzt was born in darkness and chose to be a hero of light. I was impressed with the way Drizzt fought his way to be good, although the whole world told him he couldn’t. Even today, his story still gives me courage when I decide something isn’t expected from me.

I found it hard to read a story where I already knew the details. But Arthas’ story feels the same in every format.
The book is so good, I wish it were my first time learning about this story. It is easy to relate to Arthas, someone going a dark way while trying to do the right thing.
